Why I Love Konata | Simple Fan Art | Lucky☆Star
I’m not a very good artist, but once in a while I decide to draw something. This time, it was Konata Izumi from Lucky☆Star.
I had just finished watching Nichijou: My Ordinary Life, and I had really enjoyed it. (In fact, I was so impressed with it that I splurged on a copy of the UK-only limited-edition Blu-ray—which I happened to find brand-new on eBay!)
My only disappointment with Nichijou was that it had only one season. Thinking another one of Kyoto Animation’s earlier titles might give me that same feel-good slice-of-life energy, I decided to watch Lucky☆Star.
Although it’s really nothing like Nichijou, Lucky☆Star has been very enjoyable. It’s filled with references to Japanese culture and media (particularly The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, another of KyoAni’s
earlier works). The characters—including the core cast of four high school girls—are fairly simple, but they’re enjoyable and endearing. There isn’t much of a storyline—at least, not that I can tell so far (I’m on episode 16). But the subtle humor and relatable scenarios make it a great show for winding down after a long day, and the references are fun if you’re already familiar with Japanese pop culture. But overall, Lucky☆Star wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is without Konata. She’s the blue-haired protagonist, a shameless otaku, and she definitely has ADHD. She knows what she likes—specifically, anything to do with manga and video games—and she has absolutely no patience for anything that doesn’t interest her. As such, she rarely studies, and simply pulls all-nighters the day before exams to pass her tests. (Sounds like last-minute propulsion to me!)
It reminded me of how I have to postpone certain tasks until the last minute before I can get anything done, at which point I finally get a burst of insane energy and focus to meet my deadline.
This is a little embarrassing to admit, but I feel like I’ve fallen in love with her. I’ve never been the type of person to say he has a waifu—it’s just a bit too cringe for me—but at this point, that might change. Although, with Konata, it’s really more like she’s my “spirit animal,” or role model—I don’t want to be WITH someone like her quite as much as I want to BE someone like her. She just seems so free and confident.
Here, I made a whole list of reasons why she’s awesome:
- She truly doesn’t care about other people’s opinions of her, and that allows her to express herself however she likes, without stressing out about what others may think.
- She knows what she likes and what her values are, and she lives by them religiously, even though most people don’t understand or appreciate them; she allows her life to revolve around what she finds exciting and beautiful.
- She isn’t moralistic or snobbish about her values or hobbies, except occasionally as a joke—she invites everyone to live however they like, whether they “get” her passions or not.
- She’s nice to others and genuinely considerate of their feelings, but she’s not a people-pleaser—she isn’t afraid to risk offending someone in the interest of playing a joke or having a good time, but she never offends deliberately.
- She’s surprisingly good at almost everything, from video games to sports, right up until things become a chore—and then she isn’t good at them anymore. She loses focus when things stop being interesting to her.
- Despite being “bad at life” according to most people, she doesn’t let it color her perception of herself. She knows what she likes and what’s important to her, and she likes who she is and how she lives.
- She’s anything but a perfectionist, yet when she’s having fun with something, she always does it well.
- She never gets embarrassed, and this gives her the freedom to express herself and interact with people however she likes without being uncomfortable.
- She gives you permission to be like her—to relax and be yourself, to like what you like, and to enjoy being alive. She shows that it’s okay to be an unconventional person with strange interests and quirks.
Who wouldn’t wanna be that kind of person?? Who wouldn’t wanna be friends with that kind of person?? Imagine being someone who’s that chill!!
Believe it or not, Konata is why I started this blog. I’ll be going into more detail in a later post, but watching Lucky☆Star made me realize how much I love talking about anime, manga, and great art and stories in general. Normally, I’m in such a hurry to get things done that I barely spend any serious time on the things I enjoy, just for the sake of enjoying them.
So I’ve decided to give the things I love more space in my life, and this blog is a big part of that. (And so was buying a physical copy of Nichijou. I still can’t believe I found an unopened copy of the limited edition that only sold in the UK! I’ll be sure and make an unboxing video and review for the blog once it gets here.)
Well, that’s all I’ve got for today. Thank you for reading my words, random internet person. Until next time,
Yours warmly,
Adrien

P.P.S. True to Konata’s example, I was able to buy a gaming console and several video games at an unexpected bargain! Check it out here on my latest post.
